Known around Montreal as one of the most highly regarded Zen Buddhist meditation centres in the city, Enpuku-ji offers people a place for still meditation in the middle of the urban jungle. The centre attracts a wide range of Montrealers from all religious and ethnic backgrounds looking to learn about and practice in the Japanese Rinzai Zen tradition.
The Rinzai Tradition
Myokyo is a Rinzai zen monk who adheres to the Zen practices established by Rinzai Gigen. She can be found not only at Enpuku-ji, but also at McGill and Concordia Universities as the associate Buddhist chaplain. Rinzai Gigen (Lin chi) founded a school of Zen Buddhism in ninth century China at a time of tremendous religious persecution against Buddhism and his body of teachings, known as the Rinzai-roku, has continued to spread throughout the world ever since. The Zen Centre schedule of practice includes morning and evening meditation, as well as one and five-day retreats.
The Montreal Zen Poetry Festival
Enpuku-ji students organize the biennial Montreal Zen Poetry Festival, which brings together poets, monks and scholars.
