For the owner of Tortilleria Maya, a table without tortillas is simply incomplete. As many Latin Americans, she leaves space in each meal for her 100 per cent corn crepe-like creations. According to Mayan legend, these very healthy discs were invented by a farmer wishing to satisfy his king’s hunger. Whether the story is true or not, Southern Americans have been eating them for at least 12,000 years. The only difference is that they are no longer made by hand as before, but on large heated presses that can make up to 10,000 tortillas per hour.
For Little Ones… And Big Ones
The tortilla can be accompanied by a number of different things, such as meat, fish or vegetables, as well as light or spicy sauces, depending on how adventurous you are. While Tortilleria Maya distributes in large quantity to other stores, many people come here to buy tortillas they know will be fresh, made that day, and full of Mexican heat.
Bring Latin America to Your Kitchen!
Tortilleria Maya, while specializing in making tortillas, offers plenty other products made on location or directly imported from South America, such as tostadas, nachos, jalapenos, chipotle. Staff also make salsas and guacaomoles. You will find take-out dishes such as burritos, tacos and supreme nachos as well as refried beans. Hungry? Corn chips with natural jalapeno, chipotle, lemon or black bean flavour will satisfy your taste buds as well as your stomach.
Location: The restaurant is located in the Jean-Talon market.
