The House of the Rising Sun
Sakura Gardens opened in 1973, making it one of Montreal’s oldest Japanese restaurants. Distinctly traditional, the restaurant aims to bring a little bit of Japanese elegance and culture to Montreal diners. Not surprisingly, you’ll often find older Japanese Montrealers enjoying a meal here. In fact, Sakura Garden is a favourite of the staff of the Japanese Embassy for both private and business dinners. The charming waitresses speak French, English and Japanese, are gracefully dressed in traditional, colourful kimonos. The decor is equally traditional with paper lanterns providing splashes of colour amidst the shojo dividers. Sakura deviates from Japanese tradition with their Western-style tables in the two main dining rooms.

A Taste of Japan
Sakura Gardens opened long before sushi became trendy and raw fish was acceptable to Western palates. The menu has a selection of grilled fish, including fresh lobster from the restaurants impressive live lobster tank. Lobster sashimi is very popular in Japan and with Sakura Garden’s clients. As are the selection of Udon and Soba based noodle dishes. The bento boxes – a meal in an elegant lacquered box – offer an assortment of sushi, tempura and grilled meat. Also on the menu is shabu-shabu - a hot fondue made from flavourful fish stock. The agedashi tofu, which is tempura-coated tofu with bonito fish flakes marinated in a delicious sauce, is also delicious. Naturally, Sakura Gardens offers deliciously fresh sushi and sashimi too.

Green Tea and Beyond
Sakura Gardens seats around 270 diners but offers the choice of a social or more intimate ambience. Those who love to watch the action can take a seat at the sushi bar in one of the two dining rooms. Its great fun to watch the chef assemble sushi before your eyes, and solitary diners won’t feel lonely. Small groups seeking privacy can reserve one of the tatami rooms for a traditional Japanese style dining experience. For large celebrations, there is also a room that can accommodate parties of up to 80 and offers karaoke. Though it may be impossible, it’s worth leaving room for the delicious green tea cheesecake. Sakura Gardens truly blends the best of East into West and brings a little slice of Japan to Montreal.
