This small and discrete Japanese restaurant, on Upper St Laurent Boulevard, is popular with long-time residents of the trendy Mile End district. The dim lighting and comfortable booths, separated by bamboo and Japanese paper screens, create a cozy and laid-back atmosphere. Open since the 1980s under various owners and in various locations, the current version of Azuma has been serving delicious Japanese cuisine since 1999.
More Than Sushi
Azuma offers much more than sushi. They serve some Japanese specialties that you won’t find in any of the trendier places. This modest restaurant’s generous menu includes the usual non-sushi treats like tempura, wakame (seaweed) salad, yakitori (chicken brochettes) and steaks. It’s this low fuss, high quality combination that makes Azuma so popular with Mile End locals. There are also tofu and vegetable dishes for vegetarians, and a variety of seafood dishes. The sushi itself is very fresh, delicious and beautifully presented.
Good Neighbours
The service at Azuma is friendly and unhurried, which makes it the perfect place to linger over an extra carafe of sake. The subdued and gentle atmosphere makes it a nice spot to take a date that you want to get to know just a little bit more intimately. Azuma also offers a table d’hôte in the evenings and a very affordable lunch special that doesn’t skimp on quality. Even if you don’t live in the Mile End, you may want to make this a favourite for Japanese cuisine.
