If the famous Hergé character ever chose to experience his crazy adventures in Montreal, he would surely stop by Le Petit Moulinsart to sample its Belgian mussels and beer. Although Tintin and his imaginary friends may not be there in the flesh, they do live in the artistic renditions featured on the walls of this restaurant-bistro.
A Little Bit of Europe
Established in the heart of Old Montreal for its European cachet, Le Petit Moulinsart has managed to recreate the traditional ambience found in real Belgian bistros. The look is simple, but unique: wood-trimmed walls and ceilings, frescos of the popular Tintin comic strip, velvet drapes and a small bar. In the summer, a lovely terrace surrounded by cobblestones, typical of Old Montreal, can be enjoyed in the courtyard.
Mussels and More
As it is one of the few Belgian restaurants in Montreal, it will come as no surprise that mussels are the house specialty. Le Petit Moulinsart offers a wide array of sauces from a simple tomato garlic to saffron cream, or try the sake and Chinese coriander sauce. If mussels aren’t your thing, Le Petit Moulinsart serves several other dishes typical of Belgian cuisine including beef tartar, three-cheese vegetarian lasagna and waterzooi, a classic stew made of chicken, vegetables, cream and butter. The table d'hôte menus, which are changed daily, feature seasonal delights such as lamb loin in a herb and sun-dried tomato sauce, veal chops in a Meaux mustard sauce, and breast of duck in a tart strawberry sauce.
Chug-a-Lug
Le Petit Moulinsart is also one of the few Montreal restaurants to offer such a wide variety of Belgian beers. In addition to Lucifer, Chimay Grande Reserve, Blanche de Bruges and Delirium Tremens beers, the drink menu also includes an equally extensive wine list.
