For Saint-Joseph
Montreal is the city of a thousand bell towers, a testimony to the passion of the local Catholic community, the largest manifestation of which being the Saint-Joseph Oratory on Mont-Royal. It’s one of the most important spiritual places in the world, symbolising the presence of the sacred in the heart of the city. The Oratory is intimately related to Brother André, the most appreciated Quebecer of the time, who, in 1904, decided to build a chapel on the side of the mountain in order of Saint-Joseph. The Brother’s piety was the source of several unexplained healings. At his death, a million people visited his coffin, and he was sainted by Pope Jean-Paul II in 1982.

A Place for Pilgrimage
The Saint-Joseph Oratory is host of a variety of liturgical, religious, and simply spiritual functions. Both individual and communal participation is encouraged for celebrations. It’s a pilgrimage spot for those who want to renew their faith. This imposing building includes the 105-meter long basilica, which can welcome up to 10,000 people, a museum, a crypt, a primitive chapel like those in 1908, and a votive chapel where walking canes have been abandoned after surprise healings. Surrounded by splendid gardens and a monumental stone staircase, it hosts a spectacularly valued patrimonial collection, as well as several liturgical works of art.
