Built in 1916 as a monument to all the merchant marine sailors who lost their lives during the war, the Tour de l'Horloge or Clock Tower located in the Old Port was erected in 1922 and remains a popular destination for anyone embarking on a tour of historic Old Montreal. Officially inaugurated by the dashing young Prince of Wales—who later went on to become King Edward VIII before abdicating the throne to marry Wallis Simpson—the Clock Tower has become a part of Montreal's history.
Must See
More than just an historic monument, the top floor of the famous Clock Tower also houses a magnificent observatory affording fantastic views of Île-Sainte-Hélène, the Jacques Cartier Bridge and the eastern end of Old Montreal. Rising a total of 192 steps from the base of the tower to the observatory, the Clock Tower is a must-see on any tour of the Old Port.
Summer Fun
Like all the Quays of the Old Port, the area of the Clock tower is always abuzz with summer fun and excitement. Suitable for the whole family, many tourists and locals alike take advantage of the bicycling and quadricycling, speedboating, cruises and tour bus rides that are offered along the waterfront. With various festivals and constant busker performances and well as the Cirque du Soleil and IMAX theatre shows nearby, the Clock Tower is strategically situated in the heart of Montreal’s Old Port.
