The old crafts and techniques honed during centuries of use and carefully transmitted from generation to generation have been relegated to the past by the age of industrialization and new marketing techniques. Today, many people ignore how artisans worked and how people lived in the past. The Musée des Maîtres et Artisans du Québec brings visitors back to this forgotten world by exhibiting its furniture, textiles, objects, toys, silver and gold plate, tools, statues, sacred objects, and other religious ornaments that comprised the French Canadians’ daily life in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. This museum possesses a permanent collection of more than 7,000 religious, cultural and artistic objects. Offering a wide range of scholastic activities, guided tours and temporary exhibitions throughout the year, this museum exhibits everything from traditional furniture to religious relics.
Interesting Historical Footnote
Officially accredited by the Quebec provincial government in 1978, the Musée des Maîtres et Artisans du Québec, a museum dedicated to the religious, cultural, social and popular history of the Quebecois people, has an interesting history itself. Housed in a 19th century Neo Gothic church that used to be known as the Presbyterian Church of Saint Andrew and Saint Paul on René-Levesque Boulevard, the condemned church was actually dismantled stone by stone and reassembled in Ville Saint-Laurent during the early 1930s. Located adjacent to the present-day CEGEP Saint-Laurent, it has remained an important bastion of Quebec history and culture throughout its existence.
