Unparalleled Elegance for More Than a Century
Erected in 1893, The Monument National graces downtown Montreal with unparalleled elegance. The theatre has been the site of much of the city’s theatrical history, as well a Canadian landmark: it houses the Ludger-Duvernay Hall, the oldest continuously operating theatre hall in the country. Bought by the National School Theatre in the mid-1960s, the Monument National underwent major renovations for its centennial. It was reopened to the public in 1993, fully restored with a new café, a state-of-the-art studio space, a gallery of photos, and of course, its recovered beauty.
A History of Professionalism
The Monument National plays an important triple role in the theatre arts of Montreal: it facilitates the production and presentation of plays created by the National School Theatre, the presentation of plays by seniors, as well as showcasing the professional performances of outside companies. The establishment shelters the historic Ludger-Duvernay theatre hall with more than 800 seats and the Salle Hydro-Québec with space for 125 to 180 people, as well as a variety of small venues, including the intimate cabaret space La Balustrade.
