In Montreal, there are a handful of Mexican places to choose from, and with its bright yellow and red exterior, Taqueria Mex aims to stand out. Located on St. Laurent Blvd. just south of Mont. Royal Ave. this comfy eatery has been a go-to place for inexpensive Mexican cuisine since the late 1980s. With sombreros lining the walls, lanterns strung from the ceilings, and even a stuffed Mexican muchacho chilling permanently at the counter, you might very well feel like you’re south of the border.
Yo quiero Taqueria!
While the service is fast, don’t expect a Taco Bell knock off. You order at the counter, grab a seat at one of the multi-coloured tables, and within minutes your hot meal will be delivered with a smile. The menu is peppered with standard Mexican dishes like burritos and quesadillas, stuffed with guacamole, black beans, and melted cheese. For the herbivores, Taqueria sports a vegetarian menu, which is essentially a replica of their meat menu, only cheaper. Side dishes range between seasoned rice, salad, and chips, which are made in-house, along with their tangy guacamole.
Salsa, Salsa!
What sets Taqueria Mex apart from almost every other Mexican joint in the city is its copious salsa bar, which is bordering on a veritable salad bar. On top of their multiple salsas to choose from, the bar has room for diced onions and tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, and fresh cilantro. Stack these trimmins’ on your rice and you’ve got your own makeshift mexi-salad. And if the pool of salsa that your burrito is swimming in is not deep enough for you, return trips to the salsa bar are always encouraged.
