Empanada Heaven
La Chilenita is a neighbourhood gem. It is unpretentious and has a few tables at which to eat (most of the business is take-out). Although minimally decorated, this establishment does not skimp on food quality. La Chilenita, the self proclaimed “house of empanadas,” specializes in these individually sized doughy pastry turnovers. Although beef is the traditional empanadas filling, La Chilenita offers 13 other varieties including seafood (clams, scallops, and crab in a white wine and cilantro sauce) and chicken with onions and red peppers. Vegetarians have five varieties to choose from including la Napolitana (artichokes, green olives, tomatoes, feta, and mozzarella) and the vege-tofu (tofu, zucchini, carrots, mushrooms, red peppers, black olives, and onions). Empanadas are sold by the piece, half dozen and dozen.

More Homemade Fare
Venture beyond the house specialty and try one of the sandwiches such as the pollo-palta (grilled chicken, avocado, tomato, and mayonnaise). La Chilenita also has enchiladas (served with black beans and rice), quesadillas, nachos, tacos, and fajitas. Most dishes are available as vegetarian, beef, chicken or shrimp. For a lighter meal, try one of the salads such as the house salad (lettuce, tomato, green beans, olives, cilantro, avocado, and house dressing).

Fresh Fruit Drinks
Thirsty? Try one of the refreshing blended fruit smoothies with imaginative names like the vampiro, la bomba and splash (strawberry, pineapple, mango and orange). Top everything off with a traditional dessert like alfajores (cookies filled with a milk confection and dusted with coconut).
