In 1670 Radisson and Des Groseilliers, two clever, ambitious Frenchmen, had the idea of setting up fur trading posts around James Bay and Hudson Bay. How could they have imagined, at that time, that this initiative would have led them to build one of Canada’s most prosperous and fruitful companies, the Hudson Bay Company. Now possessing more than 500 stores throughout Canada, the Hudson Bay Company also owns several other companies such as Zellers and Home Outfitters and is definitely one of the country’s most famous institutions.
A Quiet Evolution
After having bartered for Native American furs for several centuries, the Hudson Bay Company extended its activities even further inland and increased its market with consumable goods such as coffee, tea, tobacco and preserves. When the HBC acquired its most powerful rival, The North West Company, in 1821, the company extended its stores from one ocean to the other and up to the great Canadian North, becoming one of Canada’s biggest retail enterprises. The company went through a dynamic modernization program and it’s only after that, that the Bay stores started selling a wide variety of items specially designed for the home.
