Profile Last Updated: October 15, 2008
A meal at Joe Beef will leave you with the distinct sense you are eating in a true Montreal eatery. Opened in 2005, it has quickly earned a reputation as one of the city's must-visit restos. With two dinner sittings each night, it seats 25 and has a small summer terrace. You may need to reserve a month in advance for a Thursday to Saturday evening. Try to nab a seat at the oyster bar to watch some oyster shucking and maybe hear a good story or two.
Gourmet Feast
Though its name suggests a steakhouse – and there are succulent rib and sirloin steaks – the bistro pays tribute to local philanthropist Charles McKiernan. Nicknamed Joe Beef, he founded a tavern in Old Montreal in the mid-1800s and often helped the needy. Highlighting market fresh ingredients, the daily menu features some well-known dishes with a twist. Try indulgent lobster spaghetti with bacon or the lobster Irish stew. There's also skate – not steak – frites, soft-shell crab and oysters galore, best enjoyed raw on ice with some wine. Sometimes you can delight in stuffed rabbit, or seared liver topped with smoked meat and a pickle. The wine list is solid and desserts range from chocolate eclairs to tarts to fruit and cheese plates.
Tavern Feel
The ambience is unapologetically unpretentious. You won't find fancy tablecloths, ornate décor, a sommelier or trendy martinis. The rustic eatery resembles an old but hip Montreal tavern, with leather banquettes, a chalkboard menu, mounted animal heads, rock ‘n roll music, and Peter Hoffer murals. With delectable fare and a low-key atmosphere, this spot would do the original Joe Beef proud.
