Else’s founder Else Smith, the self-proclaimed "oldest punk in Montreal,” painted the bars walls in rich hues, hung up Christmas lights that twinkle year-round, scattered knickknacks from her travels, and transformed the place into a home-away-from-home for ne'er-do-wells, artists, writers, and wanderers who often enjoyed having a drink with her. Else has since passed away, but her spirit in the bar lives on. There's still no better place to meet friends for a rousing round of hot or cold cider or to quietly read a book while waiting for a new friend to introduce him or herself.
Ales and Scotches
Else's offers an excellent selection of ales and scotches. Its staff can also skillfully construct just about any drink you can dream up. On autumn afternoons, it's an ideal place to sip a hot tea with lemon and rum while playing chess and watching the rain trickle down the windowpanes. Else's also offers bar snacks, including a fine vegetarian chili that comes with sour cream and nacho chips.
