An important symbol of Montreal's Anglican heritage, Christ Church Cathedral was constructed between 1857 and 1859 to serve the growing number of Anglicans who lived throughout the city and needed a permanent house of worship. Designed in the Neo-Gothic style by the renowned British architect Frank Wills, the cathedral attracts music aficionados from around the city with its spectacular tracker-action organ built by Karl Wilhelm in 1980. Underground Montreal
Sitting atop the Promenades Cathedrale underground shopping network and McGill metro station, Christ Church Cathedral was actually raised above the ground on steel beams during the construction of the famous commercial shopping centre. Playing host to various world-class classical concert performances throughout the year, the cathedral's front steps attract Montrealers and tourists alike looking for a quiet place to enjoy lunch or a quick rest.
