The market is hard to miss. Its famous brick tower has loomed above Montreal's Saint-Henri district since 1931. The place offers something for every taste: delicious breads, pastries, pâtés and quiches from the Première Moisson bakery, assorted cheeses from cheese shops, succulent sausages and deli meats from William J. Walter, fresh fish, seafood and meats, not to mention the countless fruit and vegetable stands.
Seeing in Technicolor
During the winter, you barely notice this building with its parking lot full of cars, but during the summer, the parking lot is transformed into a gigantic greenhouse. Over 18 florists, merchants of exotic flowers and plants, brighten up the place. It goes without saying that the market, with its many colours and floral fragrances, attracts clients from blocks away.
A Bit of History
The Atwater Market’s building has had many functions since its construction. On top of playing house to about 20 shops, the Atwater Market also served as a meeting place for many political, social or sporting events. Famous politicians such as Camilien Houde and Maurice Duplessis have brought down the house with rousing speeches. Wrestling matches have also attracted many a spectator. Even though the times have changed, a room with a view of the Lachine Canal is still available to welcome corporate events.
