Home Away from Home
In 1985, Amelio felt it was time for the change. He left the banking business and turned his pizza hobby into a full-time job, by opening his self-titled restaurant at the corner of St. Famille and Milton. Tucked away in the middle of the McGill ghetto, Amelio’s caters primarily to students. This invariably means affordable prices, which Amelio’s has in spades. The clientele stretches far beyond the studious types, as it has established itself as a neighbourhood mainstay amongst locals.
Pizzarific
Most restaurants have specialties, an item that towers over the others. Ask anyone about Amelio’s, and the first thing that comes to mind is their pizza. If you’re looking for a light, thin-crusted, pie, you’ve come to the wrong place. Amelio’s serves it thick and stuffed, with a quagmire of melted cheese and toppings, bogged down over a saucy and doughy centre that extends out into a perfectly crisped crust. There are classic and fresh pizza toppings and expect salad and garlic bread with your meals. No surprises here, just satisfaction.
Not Too Flashy
The decor is just what you’d expect from your friendly, neighbourhood restaurant. Not too flashy, it provides a homey alternative to the slick, faceless resto-bars a few blocks away on St. Laurent. With exposed brick wall, dim lighting in the evening and a window looking onto Ste-Famille, the decor is unpretentious and so is the clientele.
