Under the auspices of the Quebec Legal Aid Act, the team at the Community Legal Centre of Montreal has provided affordable legal services to lower-income community members in Montreal and Laval in many areas of the law, including criminal, civil and family law, since 1973. Today, they process more than 86,000 requests for legal aid every year and give more than 25,000 telephone consultations to people in emergency situations such as those placed under arrest or detainment.
A Helping Hand
No matter where you live in Montreal and Laval, the Community Legal Centre of Montreal can help you. To apply for legal aid you must declare all forms of income and property and sign an application form. If you are a single person, an adult with one child, or a family with two or more children, you qualify for free legal aid if your total income falls below established levels. Please visit the website to find out further information on your eligibility with a contribution.
Fighting for Justice
The legal team at the centre represents their clients in a number of areas under the law. Under civil and social law, the Centre represents clients in cases of consumer protection, rental boards, opposition to seizure, welfare, unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation, automobile accidents and criminal acts. In cases of family law, clients can get help with divorces and separations, alimony, child custody, visiting rights as well as adoptions. The highly-trained lawyers at the centre also represent criminal law cases and young offenders, as well as immigrants and refugees, including cases of sponsorship, citizenship and expulsion.
