Now that its quarantine is over, the 8-kg lobster saved from a pot of boiling water in Boston is on display at the Montréal Biodôme, where visitors can admire it at their leisure. Given the unprecedented attention attracted by the unusual tale of this sea-floor giant, the Biodôme team decided to place it in a shallow basin in the St. Lawrence Marine ecosystem, where it is easy to see. It will stay there temporarily, until April 20. Afterward, the best-known lobster in Quebec will join the other inhabitants of the deep bay in the ecosystem, its original destination.

The crustacean has made the headlines on numerous occasions in both Quebec and the United States since February 2008, when it was won by a woman in a Super Bowl draw at a New England bar. She couldn’t bear the thought of eating it, so she set out on a crusade to rescue the animal and found out that the Biodôme was actually looking for just such a specimen. The New England Aquarium, in Boston, housed the lobster until travel arrangements could be made to bring it to Montréal.

It will join the twenty or so lobsters already living at the Biodôme. Interpretation staff will be on hand to explain the behaviour, habits and biology of these nocturnal crustaceans that live on rocky bottoms, often very close to shore but also farther offshore.
