Over the past 140 years, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has assembled one of North America's finest encyclopedic collections, totalling over 30,000 objects. Its collections have grown largely through gifts and bequests of money and works of art.

Canadian Art
The visitor can trace the course of Canadian history from the struggling colony of 17th-century France to the present day through decorative art, painting and sculpture. The Museum has an exceptional collection of Canadian art. The visitor can trace the course of Canadian history from the struggling colony of 17th-century France to the present day through decorative art, painting and sculpture. Traditional furniture and religious and domestic silverware by silversmiths such as Paul Lambert, Samuel Payne and François Ranvoyzé can be found next to early portraits of the bourgeoisie by Jean-Baptiste Roy-Audy and Paul Kane's paintings of native people.

Contemporary Art
The Museum's contemporary pieces range from the clean geometric abstraction of Guido Molinari and the Plasticiens to the magic realism of Alex Colville's Church and Horse (1964). The collection includes several works by internationally acclaimed Montreal artist Betty Goodwin, as well as minimalist sculpture, installation pieces and other recent art forms.

Decorative Art
The decorative arts section of the Museum came into being in 1916 thanks to F. Cleveland Morgan, one of the most astute connoisseurs in North America. He donated hundreds of objects from around the world. Other donations include Lucile Pillow's collection of 18th-century English porcelain, Henry Norton's collection of antique glass and the Georges Clémenceau collection of 3000 Japanese incense boxes , the largest of its kind in the world. Textiles, furniture, European ceramics and 18th- and 19th-century European glassware are also on display.

European Masters
The Museum has a rich collection of paintings by European masters, as well as sculptures and objects from the Middle Ages to the present day, from 14th-century religious scenes to grisaille paintings by Mantegna.

Prints and Drawings
Most of the important European schools from the Renaissance onwards are represented in the Galleries of Prints and Drawings, including a splendid series of drawings ( The Seven Vices: Lust ) by Hendrick Goltzius and 327 drawings made by the Swiss Symbolist artist Ferdinand Hodler between 1876 and 1919.

Pre-Columbian and Inuit Art
The museum is proud to present its Inuit art collection featuring various sculptures, paintings and sketches that capture the day-to-day life and culture of Canada's fascinating Inuit peoples. Journey through the depths of time and space, from the Far North to the Andean Mountains, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' spectacular exhibitions of Pre-Columbian and Native Art.
